Hanamaki Castle and Our School

A History of Hanamaki Castle

Until the 16‚”‚ˆ Century, Hanamaki districts were ruled by the Hienuki Clan, which was ruined by Hideyosi Toyotomi for the reason of not having joined in "the Odawara Conquest"
Afterwards Hanamaki were possessed by the Nambu Clan and governed by
Hidechika, the second son of Nobuchika (later Kitasyousai). But Hidechika died after
eight years after the wounds at "the war of Masazane Kunohe"
So Nobuchika had to govern Hanamaki, which is very important to control land
and water as a military base of the Nambu Clan.
Nobuchika ,who became the deputy castellan, tried positively to develop Hanamaki.
During his ten-year reign, Hanamaki greatly developed as a castle town.
He ordered his trust-worthy retainers to live in the outworks of the castle, the group of
Samurai in the outer mout, which was called NakaKoji and OdayaKoji. He also made
Samurais (warriors) guard at FuppariKoji and made streets with sharp turns.
As a commercial town, he opened YokkaMachi and Hitoichi as a market and
established Kobunato as a port of water-borne traffic.
Furthermore for the benefit of the inhabitants of a town, he developed KamiYokka-
Machi(Upper Four-day-town) and ShimoYokkaMachi(Under Four-day-town),Daikucho
(Carpenters' town, now Futabacho), and KajiMachi(Blacksmiths' town), whose names
remain even now.
After the death of Kitasyousai, towns people celebrated, as a memory of the great
Lord, a festival, which is now 'Hanamaki Festival'.
In the site of the ancient castle lies "Hanamaki Elementary School."
